Staycity Aparthotel in York is a landmark building in a semicircular plan form in which serviced apartments of 45m2 area provide both bedroom and living space sufficient for 2 to 4 people. Serviced apartments offer cost effective short stays for business and for families wanting all the home comforts. Staycity Aparthotel is located next to the famous Barbican Theatre adjacent to the famous Roman City Wall in a central location of the city.
Overview
The 197 serviced apartments are complemented by 2 restaurants and an on-site gym. The total building area is 9000m2 , and was built using Metek’s light steel framing supported on a steel framed podium at the first floor.
The curved façade was made by faceting the light steel wall panels by 4.5 degrees at the window positions. The floors had a maximum span of 5.3m and were formed using Metek’s 170mm deep composite concrete slab that was supported by the load-bearing cross-walls. Slim floor beams using 200mm deep steel H sections provided larger open areas and spanned over the corridors. A 50mm deep screed was placed on the slab for the embedded services.
End-to-End Solution
Metek installed the decking, reinforced slim floor beams and steel columns and pre-cast concrete stairs as part of their light steel package. Metek also managed all the propping required and placed all the specified bathroom pods. Metek’s construction period for the complex building form was from May to September 2015, and the project was completed mid-2016.

Construction Details
The 170mm deep composite concrete slab was supported on 100mm deep x 1.6mm C sections placed in pairs in the load-bearing walls. The 80mm deep decking was site-cut as the walls were placed radially with a 90 degree change of angle around the semi-circular plan form. The slabs were designed for early de-propping by use of 25mm diameter bar reinforcement in the deck ribs so that it is designed to be fully reinforced without composite action.
The façade wall panels were arranged in a flat portion between windows so that the curved shape was created by a 4.5 degree change in position at the windows, which was accommodated in the joints between the wall panels.
In the open plan areas, 203mm deep UC sections acted as slim floor beams and the decking was placed on spacer pieces on the bottom flange to form the required slab depth. These beams spanned up to 5m between 100mm x 100mm SHS columns that were installed as part of the walls. With CP board and insulation sheathing installed by Metek, the cladding specified was contrasting large insulated panels and traditional brick.
